Taste of summer moves indoors
Barton's Parkside Hots is a well known addition to the village of Spencerport during the summer months. Starting this fall, Barton's moves inside Abbott's Frozen Custard owned by John and Mary Marello. The new name will be Abbott's & Costello's.
Jim and Debby Barton, owners of Barton's Parkside Hots, started the business in the summer of 1991 with the help of Jim's mom, Carol. The first cart was at Pineway Ponds Park, later moving to the village in front of the old Towne Club building.
Originally the hot dog stand was created to give their children, Lindsey, Elizabeth and Allen a way to earn money to support their love of hockey. All three participated in this sport and it was quite a large expense for the family. To the Barton's delight, this turned out to be the best experience for the children. All three learned money management skills, great manners and obtained a higher confidence in themselves.
In the beginning, the Bartons were only able to offer hot dogs and sausage cooked on a gas grill but each year they have expanded.
Jim said, "My mom Carol is the backbone of the business. Helping with all aspects but most of all making the best hot sauce around." He said the sauce is not really hot, it just tastes good.
The Bartons pride themselves in only using the best. The hot dogs and Italian sausage are Zwiegles products. The ground beef comes fresh daily from the IGA in Spencerport. All of this is placed on a delicious DiPaolo bun. Jim said, "You can put our burger against any other, it's the best."
During the summer months people can enjoy the Barton's outside cart, run by Bonnie Hall, now offering a larger menu including chicken and steak sandwiches, onion rings, french fries and sweet potato fries. Also watch for the new "Costello's" plate coming soon.
This winter join them inside at Abbott's & Costello's for a continuation of two great tastes in one, located at 138 South Union Street in the village of Spencerport, 352-9750, open 7 days a week.
